Virginia Senate Debate 2024: Showdown between Tim Kaine and Hung Cao
Sen. Tim Kaine announces he will run again in 2024: ‘I’ve got more I want to do’
Sen. Tim Kaine and Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff speak at Rep. Bobby Scott's Labor Day Cookout
Who is Tim Kaine?
Creating Jobs and Strengthening our Economy
"Tim Kaine knows that our economy is strongest when workers and families have access to good-paying jobs, higher wages, and the skills to succeed and get ahead. When Tim was Governor, Virginia was ranked the best state for business. As Senator, he’s working to ensure that every Virginia family has a fair shot at the American dream. He strongly believes Virginia has the best workforce in the country, and has authored bipartisan legislation to give Virginia workers even more tools to succeed."
Protecting Reproductive Rights
"Right now, women are facing threats to reproductive freedom around the country with new draconian abortion restrictions and extremist legislatures plotting to rip away even more reproductive rights following the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade. Virginia is the last state in the South without an extreme abortion ban – and Tim Kaine is fighting in the U.S. Senate to stand up for women across the country so they can make their own health care decisions without interference from out-of-touch politicians."
Making Health Care More Affordable
"Tim is standing up for access to quality, affordable health care for every Virginian. That’s why he is working to lower health care costs and protect health care coverage for Virginians as a member of the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee."
Securing The Border
"Tim has voted for nearly $300 billion for border security to stop the flow of illicit drugs and weapons into the U.S., address humanitarian needs at the border, and keep Virginians safe. He supports the bipartisan border security bill – the best bill in decades to secure the border – and will work with anyone willing to provide law enforcement with the tools they have been asking for to protect us."
Fighting For Immigrant Communities
"Virginia is home to over one million immigrants from all across the globe, and Tim believes that diversity makes our Commonwealth stronger. That’s why Tim is determined to fix our broken immigration system by making the process fairer and more efficient; creating a path to citizenship for those who are eligible and standing up against xenophobia. During a debate on immigration reform in 2013, Tim made history when he proudly delivered the first full speech in Spanish on the U.S. Senate floor."
Prioritizing Public Safety
"Dating back to his tenure as Mayor of Richmond, Tim Kaine has a decades-long record of keeping Virginia safe and cutting crime. Tim believes weapons of war have no place on our streets or in our schools, which is why he supports universal background checks, banning assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, and providing more support for people facing mental health challenges. In 2022, he worked to pass the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act – the first major federal gun safety in nearly three decades."
Fighting for Equality and Justice
"As U.S. Senator, Tim has worked tirelessly to defend our fundamental freedoms and level the playing field so every Virginian – regardless of race, religion, country of origin, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, ability, or age – can succeed and thrive. After an extreme majority on the Supreme Court gutted key protections in the Voting Rights Act, Tim got to work to protect the right to vote and was a key negotiator for the Freedom to Vote Act, legislation that would improve access to the ballot for Americans, advance commonsense election reforms and protect our democracy from attacks."
Strengthening Education and Workforce Opportunities
"Dating back to his tenure as Mayor of Richmond when he built four new schools, Tim has spent decades working to strengthen Virginia’s public education system and securing smart investments in education. Tim and his wife Anne sent their three kids to Richmond public schools, so they know firsthand the concerns parents have about their children’s education and the power that good teachers have to change kids’ lives for the better."
Standing with our Seniors
"Tim strongly opposes Medicare cuts, and he supports raising the Social Security income payroll tax cap and has stood firm against efforts to privatize the program. As a deciding vote for the American Rescue Plan, Tim helped protect the pensions of millions of workers so that we keep the promise made to millions of workers and they receive the full benefits they earned."
Investing in Rural Virginia
"In the U.S. Senate, Tim has fought to expand opportunity in rural Virginia, delivering critical funding for job training, schools, and high-speed internet. He supported the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, which will invest in roads, bridges, water pipes, and high-speed internet. As part of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, Virginia received $1.8 billion in federal funding, and nearly 470,000 Virginia families are saving on their monthly internet bill because of Tim’s support of this legislation."
Supporting our Military and Veterans
"Tim has successfully passed legislation to reduce military spouse unemployment, help remove barriers to maternal and postpartum mental health care in the military, and ease servicemembers’ transition into the civilian workforce by helping them use the skills they developed in the military to obtain a workforce credential to help them get a good job. Tim also pushed to pass the PACT Act, which expanded health care and benefits through the VA to toxic-exposed veterans and marked the largest expansion of VA health care in nearly 30 years."
Keeping America Safe and Strengthening Diplomacy
"Tim is committed to strengthening America’s national security through a balance of our military, economic, and diplomatic tools. As a member of the Armed Services Committee, Tim is working to ensure that our military has the support and resources it needs to meet its mission and that we are doing all we can to assist veterans in Virginia and across America."
